In December, a fighter jet based on an F-16, known as VISTA, made multiple flights out of Edwards Air Force Base in California. However, what was remarkable about these flights was that, for periods of time, artificial intelligence (AI) flew the jet. This event was part of a program called Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program, initiated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which explores how effective AI can be at performing tasks typically done by humans in aircraft.
AI algorithms from various sources, including Shield AI and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, were used in the tests to assess the effectiveness of the AI in aerial contests or situations. Some flights were run by Pentagon's DARPA, while others were run by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
DARPA's tests were more focused on close aerial combat including dogfighting, while AFRL explored scenarios where the AI competed against a simulated adversary in beyond-vision-range situations. The flights represent a significant milestone in the exploration of AI's capabilities in controlling fighter jets.
